CASE STUDY: BODY-WORN CAMERA AND DOCK

Product Design & Development

Acting as the product design resource, this project was a collaboration with a emerging US-based body camera vendor to develop a compact and highly functional body-worn camera from the ground up.

Working closely with the client's in-house product manager, we were responsible for translating the product requirements into a practical, manufacturable design. This included developing the overall visual identity and form of the product, while simultaneously working within the constraints of complex internal PCB assemblies, batteries, connectors and other electronic components.

The design process involved developing the initial concepts and 3D CAD, refining the ergonomics and user interface, and developing the enclosure architecture around the internal components. Particular attention was given to the assembly method, component access, sealing, fasteners, material selection, wall thicknesses, tolerances and design-for-manufacture requirements to ensure the product could transition successfully from prototype to production.

Prototyping & Testing

Multiple prototypes were produced throughout the development process to validate the design and identify areas for improvement. These prototypes allowed us to assess the physical fit of the electronics, enclosure assembly, ergonomics and operation of the various mechanical features before committing to production tooling.

The design was progressively refined through testing and feedback, with changes made to improve functionality, durability and usability while maintaining the compact overall form factor. CAD development, prototyping and engineering decisions were carried out iteratively to ensure that each stage of the design was validated before progressing.

Docking & Accessories

The project also included the development of a range of docking stations and associated components, providing users with practical and efficient ways to charge, store and manage the cameras. These products were designed alongside the camera to ensure compatibility and a consistent overall product ecosystem.

Production Support

Following development, we continue to support the client through the transition into manufacturing, working with manufacturing partners to resolve production-related issues and refine the design where required.

We continue to provide ongoing product design and manufacturing support, acting as an extension of the client's engineering team and helping to ensure the product continues to perform reliably in the field.
